FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I obtain a blood test?
Most blood tests require written authorization by a physician,
dentist or nurse practitioner--usually after a doctor's appointment. There
are certain tests performed at St. Helena Hospital Laboratory that you
can order for yourself. They include:
Blood sugar level
Pregnancy test
Cholesterol
Please phone the laboratory (707-963-6483) if you are unsure of how
to obtain authorization for laboratory testing, or if you have questions
regarding laboratory testing.
What is a fasting test and how
do I prepare for it?
Certain tests require that the patient be fasting. If your doctor
indicates that you must be fasting, do not eat or drink anything for
12-14 hours prior to having your blood drawn. This includes any food
or drink (including coffee). It is usually most convenient for you to visit
the laboratory for phlebotomy (blood drawing) after a night's rest and prior
to breakfast.
Some common tests that require fasting are:
Fasting blood sugar
(FBS)
Triglycerides
Lipid panel
Glucose tolerance test
(Note: The above is not a complete list of fasting tests. There are
other tests that require that the patient fast. Usually your physician or
physician staff will indicate if you should fast. If you are not sure, phone
the lab at 707-963-6483 for this information.)
Where in the hospital is the lab located?
The St. Helena Hospital Laboratory is located on the first floor
of the ancillary services building. Just before the main hospital entrance,
you will see double glass doors to your left. Go through those doors, and
the lab waiting room will be the first door on your left, or follow the
signs directing you to the laboratory. |
